On Friday, John McCain announced his choice for a running mate. A relatively unknown governor of Alaska. A woman, no less. There are a number of things that baffle me about this particular choice. First of all, if he wanted to pick a woman, why not one with more qualifications? With any qualifications, for that matter. I mean, regardless of what you think about their particular politics , there are any number of Republican women more qualified than the governor of Alaska. So that is baffling, in and of itself.
It also seems that it takes away the Obama 'not enough experience' argument. To quote Jake Tapper of ABC, her lack of experience makes Barack Obama look like Robert Byrd. Just 20 months ago she was the part time mayor of Wasilla - a town of 9,000. Unless you count living in a state that is across the Bering Straight from Siberia, she has zero experience with anything remotely resembling foreign or security policy. And she has only been Governor of Alaska for two and a half years.
So that seems baffling as well.
Her only 'expertise' seems to be about energy. But, about all I get out of it is that she wants to drill for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Her husband works for BP on an Alaska oil field. Yet, as the Almanac of American Politics has reported, she stood up to Big Oil when she supported a natural gas pipeline instead of an oil pipeline backed by the state's major petroleum interests. McCain has been too much of a wishful thinker when it comes to energy policy. Palin could champion a more grounded approach to energy. But, that is all I see.
Of course, she is uber right wing on pro-choice issues.
But, to throw a wrench in things, Palin supported awarding benefits for same-sex couples.
Hmmmmm......what's with that?
So...to sum it all up. This is the person who just may be a heartbeat away from being the President of the United States of America: she is inexperienced, knowing little or nothing about foreign policy or national issues; she is really an anti-feminist, wanting the government to enter women's lives to block abortion, but not wanting the government to guarantee equal pay for equal work, or provide adequate child health coverage, or child care, or early childhood education; she shills for the oil and gas industry on drilling; she denies the scientific truths of global warming and evolution; she misuses her political authority; she opposes sex education and her daughter is pregnant; and, rather than being a maverick, she is on the whole a radical right-wing ideologue.
Peachy.
For god's sake...Obama/Biden 08.
